There are more than 700 species of birds in Suriname. On our day trips we show you part of it.

We offer 3 Day Trips:

1. Chocopot and weg naar zee Trip

Chocopot is a relic of a once much larger swamp forest. It covers about 100ha. A hiking trail cuts through the forest in the middle. From the trail we can observe many bird species, including the Crimson-hooded manakin. This one is already observed in this place for more than 10 years.

When searching tall trees we have a chance to encounter the Great potoo.Spotting this good camouflaged nightjar species, which looks suspiciously like a tree stump, therefore belongs to the one of possibilities.

The name Chocopot was probably given after a Belgian researcher once visited and observed the Cocoa Thrush. Therefore we will be looking for this special thrush. In addition to the many bird species, we also will be looking for the other mammals of the forest, including the Pale-throated Sloth, the Linnaeus two-toed Sloth, teh Red howler monkey and the Squirrel monkey.

After the walk in chocopot we continue to Weg naar zee. Here we are looking for the rare Rufous crab Hawk. We also have a chance to see the Scarlet Ibis and the Black Skimmers. Many come here at low tide for hibernating, including the Semipalmated sandpiper, the Least sandpiper and the Hudsonian whimbrel. In the narrow creeks next to the road we observe the Solitary sandpiper and the American Pygmy Kingfisher.

3. Peperpot Trip

Peperpot and Mopentibo were former coffee and Cacao plantations in the Commewijne district that was in production until the end of the twentieth century. Since 1998 the plantations were abandoned, with a secondary forest taking over. Since 2010 the Government has designated this area as a nature park, which has led to the culmination of increased wild life. Peperpot as such has became a hot zone of birds.

When the Inga and Erytryna Fusca bloom in Peperpot and Mopentibo, it has great appeal on various hummingbird species. In addition to the colorful and agile hummingbirds, there are also a number of special bird species, including the Blackish Antbird, the Green-tailed Jacamar, the Cream-colored Woodpecker, the Blood-colored Woodpecker and the Arrowhead Piculet.
